Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has openly called for Israel to be wiped off the map.

"The establishment of the Zionist regime was a move by the world oppressor against the Islamic world," the president told a conference in Tehran on Wednesday, entitled The World without Zionism.

"The skirmishes in the occupied land are part of a war of destiny. The outcome of hundreds of years of war will be defined in Palestinian land," he said.

"As the Imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map," said Ahmadinejad, referring to Iran's revolutionary leader Ayat Allah Khomeini.

His comments were the first time in years that such a high-ranking Iranian official has called for Israel's eradication, even though such slogans are still regularly used at government
rallies.

Call for unity

Addressing about 4000 students gathered in an Interior Ministry conference hall, Ahmadinejad also called for Palestinian unity, resistance and a point "where the annihilation of the Zionist regime will come".

"The Islamic umma (community) will not allow its historic enemy to live in its heartland," he said in the fiery speech that centred on a "historic war between the oppressor and the world of Islam".

The term "oppressor" is used by the clerical government to refer to the United States.

"We should not settle for a piece of land," he said of Israel's pullout from the Gaza Strip.

"Anyone who signs a treaty which recognises the entity of Israel means he has signed the surrender of the Muslim world," Ahmadinejad said.

"Any leaders in the Islamic umma who recognise Israel face the wrath of their own people."

Major change

Ahmadinejad, a veteran of Iran's hardline Revolutionary Guards, took office in August after scoring a landslide win in a June presidential election.

His tone represents a major change from that of former president Mohammad Khatami, whose favoured topic was "dialogue among civilisations" and who led an effort to improve Iran's relations with the West.

But Ahmadinejad instead spoke of a "historic war".

"It dates backs hundreds of years. Sometimes Islam has advanced. Sometimes nobody was winning. Unfortunately over the past 300 years, the world of Islam has been in retreat," he lamented.

In September, Bahrain announced it was ending a decades-old law banning trade ties with Israel. Earlier this month, Qatar said it was donating US$6 million to help build a soccer stadium for a mixed Arab-Jewish team, the first such financial assistance by an Arab state for any town inside Israel.

Unprecedented steps

The modest but unprecedented steps were seen as a response to Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in September. Nevertheless, Ahmadinejad said, "There is no doubt that the new wave (of attacks) in Palestine will soon wipe off this disgraceful blot (Israel) from the face of the Islamic world."

"Ahmadinejad has clearly declared the doctrine of his government. He is returning Iran to the revolutionary goals it was pursuing in the 1980s," said Mohammad Sadeq Hosseini, an expert on Middle Eastern affairs.

"By these comments, Ahmadinejad is committing himself to those goals. He is also sending the message that his government won't back down."

Israeli response

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev issued a vague response. "Today, Israelis heard two extremists speak openly about destroying the Jewish state. One was the new president of Iran, and the other was the leader of Hamas, Mahmoud Zahar.

"And it appears the problem with these extremists is that they followed through on their violent declarations with violent actions."

The United States said Ahmadinejad's remarks proved the accuracy of Washington's fears about Iran's contentious nuclear programme.

"I think it reconfirms what we have been saying about the regime in Iran. It underscores the concerns we have about Iran's nuclear intentions," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said.

Ebrahim Yazdi, a former Iranian foreign minister, said Ahmadinejad's remarks harmed Iran.

"Such comments provoke the international community against us. It's not to Iran's interests at all. It's harmful to Iran to make such a statement," he said.

He said the comments gave Israel justification for urging the world to take a tougher stand against Iran and refer its nuclear programme to the UN Security Council for

A New York rally by the Islamic Thinkers Society outside the Israeli consulate yesterday featured chants of "The mushroom cloud is on its way! The real holocaust is on its way!"

The demonstration by the Queens-based group was monitored by the Investigative Project on Terrorism whose members noted signs including "Islam will Dominate" and a picture with an Islamic flag flying over the White House.

The chants were in Arabic and translated by the Investigative Project on Terrorism, headed by Steve Emerson, a former reporter for CNN.

GAZA, April 17 (Reuters) - Palestinian militants linked to President Mahmoud Abbas's increasingly fractured Fatah movement threatened on Monday to attack Jews overseas to force Israel to release Palestinian prisoners from its jails.

Two other main Palestinian militant groups, Hamas and Islamic Jihad, also said they supported violence to free more than 8,000 prisoners held by the Jewish state, but neither explicitly backed attacks on Jews outside Israel.

The call by militants of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades could heighten tension between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, which has been crippled financially by the loss of Western aid, and of tax and customs revenues frozen by Israel, after Hamas's crushing electoral win over Fatah in January. "This is an open call to all our fighters in the homeland to focus on kidnapping Israeli soldiers and civilians inside our occupied land. And if the enemy does not release our prisoners, then Zionists outside Palestine will be an easy target for our fighters," the group said in a statement.

The threat was made shortly before a Palestinian suicide bomber killed himself and six other people at a sandwich stand in Tel Aviv, an attack claimed by both Islamic Jihad and al-Aqsa.

The call could also sow discord between al-Aqsa militants and more moderate Fatah politicians including Abbas, who has been struggling to control gunmen from his own party.

Senior Fatah official and lawmaker Saeb Erekat declined to comment directly on the threat, but said securing freedom for prisoners was at the top of Abbas's agenda.

Palestinian security sources say al-Aqsa gunmen were behind some of the recent rash of kidnappings of foreigners in the Gaza Strip, which Israel quit last year after 38 years of occupation. They have also been involved in internal Palestinian clashes.

But gunmen from the group, which has also carried out suicide bombings and other attacks in Israel and the Palestinian territories during the five-year-old uprising, have not previously threatened Jews abroad.

The smaller Islamic Jihad group made a similar call, announcing at a Gaza rally that they might seize Israeli soldiers and settlers unless Palestinian prisoners are released.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri, whose party now controls the Palestinian government, said militants had given Israel "a complete chance" to free the prisoners during a de facto truce reached last year.

"Therefore we believe our people have the right to use every possible means, including the use of force, to free prisoners and end their suffering," he said.

Israel freed nearly 400 prisoners in June as part of pledges to secure the ceasefire, but Palestinians said this was not enough. Israel has said it will not release prisoners who have "blood on their hands".

4.) Ahmadinejad claims the Holocaust is a hoax.

5.) Ahmadinejad has publicaly said that the the United States is in its "last throes," an ofuli (sunset) power destined to be superceded by the toluee (sunrise) of the Islamic republic.

So what would be the world reaction to such a country being totally destroyed?

I don't mean a few critical weapons factories destroyed, not a few casualties inflicted on the Iranian military. I mean the entire country being destroyed in an hour or less under mushroom cloud after mushroom cloud.

They will look at what prompted the US to launch such a massive assault against Iran, and conclude that it is in their best interests to NOT annoy the US in any manner whatsoever after the US has quite publically demonstrated it's return to Eisenhowerian defense policies; we won't maintain a large army, we won't fight your countries, we'll just destroy them and go home.

In the calculus of internal politics all over the world; dictators such as Musharraf, Mubarak, Quaddafi and whoever else will look at the smoking radiating ruin of Iran and conclude that the price to pay in internal dissent fostered by them brutally suppressing any Islamic movements will be insignificant next to the greater price; their country being destroyed, totally, by the United States.

Congresswoman's spouse admits fraud

Robert Creamer, a leading Democratic consultant and the husband of U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), pleaded guilty Wednesday to a federal bank fraud charge for engineering an elaborate check-kiting scheme to keep afloat the Illinois consumer group he formerly headed.

In addition to the bank fraud charge involving Illinois Public Action, Creamer also pleaded guilty to a federal tax violation for failing to make income-tax withholding payments.

Federal prosecutors plan to seek a prison sentence of 41 to 51 months when Creamer is sentenced on Dec. 21. Creamer's attorney, Ted Poulos, said he hopes his client can avoid prison and instead serve his sentence another way, such as in home confinement.

After a brief hearing before U.S. District Judge James Moran, Creamer, with Schakowsky by his side, apologized for what he described as "serious errors in judgment."

Creamer said his mistakes were caused by "my burning desire to create an organization that empowered ordinary people" and that no banks lost money because of his actions.

But prosecutors said Creamer carried out the check-kiting scheme to finance his salary of about $100,000 as the group's executive director and to further his public policy goals. Creamer "stole money from banks"--more than $2.5 million--in the form of unintended, interest-free loans, said Assistant U.S. Atty. Joseph Ferguson.

Creamer's consumer-advocacy mission "brought him to a place where the ends came to justify the means, without regard to the fact that the means were violations of law," Ferguson said.

Creamer, 58, of Evanston, helped turn Public Action into the state's biggest consumer organization. The group was known for its door-to-door canvassers who sought contributions for liberal, Democratic-backed causes, like universal health insurance.

To prop up the group's perennially shaky finances, Creamer relied on fundraising techniques such as telephone sales of credit-card insurance, which triggered complaints from consumers. The Tribune first reported on the group's controversial funding practices in 1993.

The group closed its doors four years later amid mounting financial problems and a federal probe into its banking activities.

Within the last decade, Creamer melded the field organization tactics of his consumer group into a political consulting business that had many Chicago area clients.

Records show the firm netted $1.4 million over the last seven years locally, including more than a half-million dollars from Gov. Rod Blagojevich's campaign fund. Other Creamer clients included Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, Ald. Joe Moore (49th), Cook County Circuit Clerk Dorothy Brown and Cook County Commissioners Larry Suffredin, Forrest Claypool and Mike Quigley.

But the scope of Creamer's political consulting expanded nationally in recent years, aided by the rising stature of his wife in the Democratic congressional campaign hierarchy.

Elected in 1998 from the heavily Democratic 9th Congressional District on the North Shore, Schakowsky has been an effective fundraiser for her Democratic colleagues and a leading liberal spokeswoman. She holds the title of chief deputy whip for minority Democrats in the House.

Schakowsky said the events in federal court would not prevent her from seeking re-election next year or moving forward in her race to become vice chair of the House Democratic caucus.

"If you can't take a hit, this is not the business for you," she said. "I've withstood those things for a long time, and I can hit back too."

When Creamer was indicted last year, Schakowsky had maintained his innocence and questioned whether the charges were political retaliation for her criticism of President Bush's administration and former U.S. Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft.

On Wednesday she acknowledged Creamer had "made mistakes along the way" but said they should not "define or diminish this good man."

Schakowsky formerly worked for Public Action and served as a member of its policy board but has said she was unaware of its financial affairs. She was not charged with any wrongdoing.

In exchange for Creamer's guilty plea to one count of bank fraud and one count of failing to pay federal withholding taxes, authorities agreed to drop the other charges in the 34-count indictment. Moran had previously dismissed six of the charges.

Creamer specifically pleaded guilty to a check-kiting scheme in 1997, in which he directed the consumer group's employees to shuffle check and wire deposits among accounts at three banks, including Cole Taylor Bank, to artificially inflate bank balances.

He told workers to deposit insufficiently funded checks in automated teller machines that weren't connected with Cole Taylor, so that it would take more time for the bank to request payment on the checks. When Cole Taylor Bank froze the group's account in March 1997, there was a shortfall of almost $2.4 million.

Creamer also admitted to engaging in similar bank-kiting schemes in 1993 and 1996.

The group eventually covered its bank debts. But prosecutors contend that the banks still lost money because the scheme, in effect, gave Creamer's organization interest-free loans.

Creamer also pleaded guilty to failing to pay the government $1,892 in withholding taxes in 1998 on wages he paid to himself as president of a consulting firm. The money instead went to pay off debts of his consumer group.

He also admitted to failing to pay an additional $48,114 in withholding taxes from 1998 to 2000. All the tax debts have since been paid, the government said.

Schakowsky's husband pleads guilty to fraud

A political consultant who once headed the largest public interest lobbying group in Illinois pleaded guilty Wednesday to $2.3 million in bank fraud and a federal tax violation.

Robert Creamer, 58, the husband of U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., could face more than four years in federal prison at sentencing, which is scheduled for Dec. 21.

Schakowsky stood by his side as Creamer, former head of the Illinois Public Action group, told reporters there was "no doubt that my actions a decade ago were very foolish and placed myself, my family, the organization and many of those who worked with me at considerable risk."

"I am very deeply sorry and I offer a sincere apology to anyone who has been affected by my conduct," Creamer said, accompanied at a news conference by about two dozen of his supporters.

Schakowsky, who lives in Evanston and represents parts of northern Chicago and its suburbs, expressed doubt that the case would attract a tough challenger into her overwhelmingly Democratic district in next year's congressional primary election.

"I love my husband," Schakowsky said. She said Creamer "has worked all of his adult life to build organizations that empower the powerless, he has fought for causes that make life better for everyday people."

Creamer is one of Chicago's best-known political consultants. He has worked for the campaigns of both Mayor Richard M. Daley and Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Minutes after Creamer pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge James B. Moran, he and his supporters took issue with what prosecutors said were significant sums of money lost by banks as a result of three complex, so-called check-kiting schemes he admitted that he had engineered.

Creamer said in a statement that "no bank ever did lose any money as a result of my conduct in 1997 or at any other time while I was at Illinois Public Action."

Creamer admitted in his 18-page signed plea agreement that he wrote checks on accounts that lacked sufficient funds to cover them. He was able to do this repeatedly because he moved money from one account to another in three banks in 1997, playing what bankers describe as the float and thus making them believe that the accounts had more money in them than they actually did.

When the three banks realized there was a problem and froze the accounts in May 1997, there was a positive balance in two of the accounts, according to the plea agreement. But it said that his account in Chicago's Cole Taylor Bank had a negative balance of $2.385 million.

At the time, there were $370,000 in insufficiently funded checks outstanding, the document said. Prosecutors said, however, that when Creamer is sentenced the $2.385 million figure will represent the amount of the fraud. They said it took months to pay off the negative balance.

Creamer acknowledged that he had operated two other check-kiting schemes, which took place in 1993 and 1996. In addition, he pleaded guilty to failing to collect $1,800 in withholding tax from an employee of his political consulting firm. He used the $1,800 to pay a debt to a creditor of Illinois Public Action "whom I believed could not afford to lose the money."

Before Creamer entered his plea, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Ferguson told the court that bank fraud is an offense that may not be punished by probation.

Nevertheless, veteran defense counsel Theodore Poulos told reporters he believes that Moran can fashion a sentence that would involve no incarceration for Creamer. He was asked if that meant house arrest or something similar and said it could be that. But he added later that his goal is to get Creamer a sentence that would avoid any confinement.

"This case involves a host of extraordinary mitigating factors that are rarely present in a prosecution on these types of charges," Poulos said. He said he hoped that the court would "take into account that Bob Creamer did not take these actions for personal gain, that there was never any loss to any bank, that these charges are a decade old."

Ferguson, however, maintained that the banks effectively made loans they didn't even know they were making when they honored Creamer's checks. He said in some cases it took months for Creamer to erase the negative balances and that represented a significant loss to the banks.

By addressing a longtime grievance of the Palestinians and their supporters--the presence of Israeli security forces and Jewish residents on the Gaza strip--we are told, Israel will abate the hatred that drives so many Palestinians to terrorism.

In fact, the Gaza withdrawal is a deadly act of appeasement toward Israel’s committed enemies: the Palestinian Authority (PA), its rabidly anti-Semitic Palestinian supporters, and other Arab regimes throughout the Middle East. It will only increase their hope and ability to achieve their long-standing goal: the obliteration of Israel.

Contrary to their pronouncements to Western media that they seek peace with Israel via a “reasonable” land-for-peace “compromise,” the PA and its supporters have proven by their actions--and by repeated statements in Arabic--that they seek to destroy Israel. Due to their racist, tribalist, primitive philosophy, much of the Arab world seeks the eradication of Jews--and, more broadly, Western Civilization--from the Middle East. In polls taken, 80 percent of Palestinians say they do not regard Israel as legitimate. As for Israel’s other Arab neighbors, they have attempted to destroy Israel in three previous wars.

Why have those who seek Israel’s annihilation turned from open warfare to the negotiating table? Because they have learned that this--combined with terrorism--is their most effective means of destroying Israel.

Observe what the absurdly named “peace process” has consisted of. The PA and its Arab neighbors deliberately keep the Palestinians in misery, indoctrinate them with anti-Semitism, and sponsor terrorism against Israel. They then blame Israel’s “occupation” of territories won in a war of self-defense (and crucial for Israel’s security today) for the Palestinians’ misery--and blame the Palestinians’ misery for Palestinian terrorism. The solution, they convince Israel and the West, is more land, loot, and power for the “downtrodden” Palestinians--money which the Palestinian leadership uses to fund still more attacks on Israel.

By relying on terror and unearned guilt, the enemies of Israel have been able to undermine Israel’s security and moral confidence in a way they never could by direct attack.

Consider the recent history. In response to his long record of terrorizing Israel in the name of “Palestinian liberation,” Yasser Arafat got recognition as the “legitimate representative” of the Palestinians. Under the Oslo accords, he was given billions in cash and a vast arsenal of deadly weapons for “security forces” that he would use to oppress Palestinians and terrorize Israel. Unsurprisingly, terrorism coupled with blaming Israel, having been handsomely rewarded, increased dramatically. Then, in 2000, Arafat was offered unprecedented territorial concessions; figuring he could get more by terrorism, he rejected the proposal and launched a second Intifada. The resulting escalation of terrorism, along with Arab nations claiming that anti-American terrorism stems from sympathy for the mistreatment of Palestinians, led to a promise from President Bush for a Palestinian state--and endless calls for Israel to show “restraint” in the face of a terrorist onslaught.

Terrorize Israel and blame it for the misery you inflict on Palestinians, the Palestinian leadership has been taught, and you shall be rewarded. Now, further terrorism and Israel-bashing have gotten the PA an unconditional withdrawal from Gaza--a crucial launching base for Arab wars of the past, and an easy means from which to further terrorize Israel. Smelling blood, Palestinians and their beloved terror organizations are already boasting: “Today Gaza, tomorrow Jerusalem.”

Any further Palestinian terrorism, of course, will simply be blamed on Israel not conceding enough, and we will be told that peace can only be achieved if Israel takes more “risks for peace”--i.e., continues to give Palestinian murderers more resources with which to launch their aggression.

The only way to stop Palestinian terrorism is for Israel to identify the PA and its supporters as the evil they are--and to righteously defeat them. Not only should Israel retain Gaza, it should destroy the Palestinian leadership and do anything else necessary to eradicate the hope that drives Palestinian terrorism--the hope of Israel’s destruction.

Then, and only then, will Israel be able to adopt a new slogan of its own: “Yesterday Palestinian terrorism, today Palestinian defeat.”

She Does Not Speak for Me
My son died in Iraq--and it was not in vain.

I lost a son in Iraq and Cindy Sheehan does not speak for me.

I grieve with Mrs. Sheehan, for all too well I know the full measure of the agony she is forever going to endure. I honor her son for his service and sacrifice. However, I abhor all that she represents and those who would cast her as the symbol for parents of our fallen soldiers.

The fallen heroes, until now, have enjoyed virtually no individuality. They have been treated as a monolith, a mere number. Now Mrs. Sheehan, with adept public relations tactics, has succeeded in elevating herself above the rest of us. Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida declared that Mrs. Sheehan is now the symbol for all parents who have lost children in Iraq. Sorry, senator. Not for me.

Maureen Dowd of the New York Times portrays Mrs. Sheehan as a distraught mom standing heroically outside the guarded gates of the most powerful and inhumane man on earth, President Bush. Ms. Dowd is so moved by Mrs. Sheehan's plight that she bestowed upon her and all grieving parents the title of "absolute moral authority." That characterization epitomizes the arrogance and condescension of anyone who would presume to understand and speak for all of us. How can we all possess "absolute moral authority" when we hold so many different perspectives?

I don't want that title. I haven't earned that title.

Although we all walk the same sad road of sorrow and agony, we walk it as individuals with all the refreshing uniqueness of our own thoughts shaped in large measure by the life and death of our own fallen hero. Over the past few days I have reached out to other parents and loved ones of fallen heroes in an attempt to find out their reactions to all the attention Mrs. Sheehan has attracted. What emerges from those conversations is an empathy for Mrs. Sheehan's suffering but a fundamental disagreement with her politics.
Ann and Dale Hampton lost their only child, Capt. Kimberly Hampton, on Jan. 2, 2004, while she was flying her Kiowa helicopter. She was a member of the 82nd Airborne and the company commander. She had already served in Afghanistan before being deployed to Iraq. Ann Hampton wrote, "My grief sometimes seems unbearable, but I cannot add the additional baggage of anger. Mrs. Sheehan has every right to protest . . . but I cannot do that. I would be protesting the very thing that Kimberly believed in and died for."

Marine Capt. Benjamin Sammis was Stacey Sammis's husband. Ben died on April 4, 2003, while flying his Super Cobra helicopter. Listen to Stacey and she will tell you that she is just beginning to understand the enormousness of the character of soldiers who knowingly put their lives at risk to defend our country. She will tell you that one of her deepest regrets is that the world did not have the honor of experiencing for a much longer time this outstanding Marine she so deeply loved.

Speak to Joan Curtin, whose son, Cpl. Michael Curtin, was an infantryman with the 2-7th 3rd ID, and her words are passionately ambivalent. She says she has no room for bitterness. She has a life to lead and a family to nurture. She spoke of that part of her that never heals, for that is where Michael resides. She can go on, always knowing there will be that pain.

Karen Long is the mother of Spc. Zachariah Long, who died with my son Kyle on May 30, 2003. Zack and Kyle were inseparable friends as only soldiers can be, and Karen and I have become inseparable friends since their deaths. Karen's view is that what Mrs. Sheehan is doing she has every right to do, but she is dishonoring all soldiers, including Karen's son, Zack. Karen cannot comprehend why Mrs. Sheehan cannot seem to come to grips with the idea that her own son, Casey, was a soldier like Zack who had a mission to complete. Karen will tell you over and over again that Zack is not here and no one, but no one will dishonor her son.

My wife, Robin, has a different take on Mrs. Sheehan. She told me, "I don't care what she says or does. She is no more important than any other mother."

By all accounts Spc. Casey Sheehan, Mrs. Sheehan's son, was a soldier by choice and by the strength of his character. I did not have the honor of knowing him, but I have read that he attended community college for three years and then chose to join the Army. In August 2003, five months into Operation Iraqi Freedom and after three years of service, Casey Sheehan re-enlisted in the Army with the full knowledge there was a war going on, and with the high probability he would be assigned to a combat area. Mrs. Sheehan frequently speaks of her son in religious terms, even saying that she thought that some day Casey would be a priest. Like so many of the individuals who have given their lives in service to our country, Casey was a very special young man. How do you decry that which someone has chosen to do with his life? How does a mother dishonor the sacrifice of her own son?
Mrs. Sheehan has become the poster child for all the negativity surrounding the war in Iraq. In a way it heartens me to have all this attention paid to her, because that means others in her position now have the chance to be heard. Give equal time to other loved ones of fallen heroes. Feel the intensity of their love, their pride and the sorrow.

To many loved ones, there are few if any "what ifs." They, like their fallen heroes before them, live in the world as it is and not what it was or could have been. Think of the sacrifices that have brought us to this day. We as a country made a collective decision. We must now live up to our decision and not deviate until the mission is complete.

Thirty-five years ago, a president faced a similar dilemma in Vietnam. He gave in and we got "peace with honor." To this day, I am still searching for that honor. Today, those who defend our freedom every day do so as volunteers with a clear and certain purpose. Today, they have in their commander in chief someone who will not allow us to sink into self-pity. I will not allow him to. The amazing part about talking to the people left behind is that I did not want them to stop. After speaking to so many I have come away with the certainty of their conviction that in a large measure it's because of the deeds and sacrifices of their fallen heroes that this is a better and safer world we now live in.

Those who lost their lives believed in the mission. To honor their memory, and because it's right, we must believe in the mission, too.

We refuse to allow Cindy Sheehan to speak for all of us. Instead, we ask you to learn the individual stories. They are glorious. Honor their memories.

Honor their service. Never dishonor them by giving in. They never did.

Mr. Griffin is the father of Spc. Kyle Andrew Griffin, a recipient of the Army Commendation Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal and the Bronze Star, who was killed in a truck accident on a road between Mosul and Tikrit on May 30, 2003.

As darkness falls over the remote mountains of northern Iraq, a man moves silently within ancient walls, setting flame to hundreds of wicks soaked in olive oil. In the dim light, shadows dance among the tombs, the urns, the black snake carved into the stones.

This is the sacred temple of the Yezidis, As followers of one of the world's oldest and most unusual religions, Yezidis practice a faith that reveres Malak Ta'us, an angel in the form of a peacock, and forbids eating lettuce, wearing the color blue or marrying in April.

But if their beliefs are far from mainstream, the Yezidis themselves reflect the great ethnic and religious diversity of Iraq, a rich melange of Christians, Kurds, Muslims, Chaldeans, Turkmen and Assyrians. And like others who suffered so much under Saddam Hussein, the Yezidis who survived his rule are determined to ensure their rights in a new and hopefully democratic Iraq.

"America is our friend and America helped all of us," says Namir Kachow Hassan, a Yezidi (YEH-zuh-dee) who serves as a senior official in the Kurdistan Regional Government of northern Iraq.

No one knows how many Yezidis there are; estimates range from less than 100,000 to 600,000. Since the U.S.-led coalition toppled Hussein, Yezidis have won a seat on the town council in Mosul. They also expect to be represented on the Iraqi Governing Council, if and when that group expands and assumes political power from the Americans on June 30.

But even in the north, the safest part of an unsafe country, the Yezidis are so worried about extremist attacks they canceled most of their traditional springtime celebrations.

"There are people in the Islamic religion who are against democracy, and there are Islamic parties that want to run all of Iraq," Hassan says. "The Iraqi people are used to violence, used to war, so they can't accept democracy very easily."

A former judge, Hassan looks and acts like any other prominent Iraqi, dressed in a dark business suit with pinstriped tie. He carries a mobile phone that rings to the tune of We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

But throughout much of their 4,000-year history, religious persecution has forced the Yezidis to lead secretive lives, resulting in the many falsehoods about their faith.

"They couldn't worship and pray openly because they were afraid," says Kheri Bozani, director of the Lalish Center in Dohuk. "If you came in the past, you couldn't meet with the Yezidi people themselves, and so there was a lot of wrong and unfortunate information."

The center, named for the Yezidis' holy Lalish Temple, opened to separate fact from fiction. But Bozani concedes that most non- Yezidis still find the faith somewhat bizarre.

"Even if you lived among the Yezidis for 10 years," he says, "you couldn't understand us very well."

Although it is rooted in nature, Yezidism has similarities to Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Hinduism.

In the beginning, the Yezidis believe, God created seven angels and ordered them to pray only to him. Thousands of years later, God created Adam and, as a test, ordered the angels to pray to Adam. Six angels did, but the seventh, Malak Ta'us, refused.

"Why did you not pray to this man I created?" God asked.

"Because I remembered your command to pray only to you," Malak Ta'us replied, according to the Yezidis' oral tradition.

For passing the test, Malak Ta'us was made chief angel and sent to earth, where God created Eve from Adam's rib. The angel taught Adam and Eve how to procreate, and thus did humans populate the earth.

Yezidis have no devil in their religion, and the reason they are called devil worshipers has long since been lost in the mists of time. One possibility is that both the Bible and the Koran, the Muslim holy book, talk of an angel-turned-devil who angered God and was cast out of heaven. Those of other faiths might have misconstrued Malak Ta'us as a "fallen" or bad angel even though Yezidis believe he was sent to earth because he was God's favorite.

Another possible reason is that the snake - a symbol of goodness to Yezidis - is viewed by Christians as the serpentine devil that tempted Adam in the Garden of Eden.

Whatever the case, Yezidis adamantly deny they are a satanic cult. "In Islam there is a God and also a devil, but in Yezidism we don't have any term like 'devil,' " Bozani says.

Nor do Yezidis have the concept of hell, instead believing that the souls of the dead repeatedly return to earth until they are purified. As punishment, a bad person might first come back stricken with disease or reincarnated in animal form.

"Someone like Saddam might return as a donkey," says Murad Ali Hamed, a Yezidi teacher.

Like all Yezidis, Hamed is Kurdish, one of the 5-million non- Arabs of northern Iraq who were brutally oppressed after Hussein came to power in 1979.

As part of his "Arabization" program, Hussein drove Yezidis and other Kurds from their villages, replacing them with Arabs. Many villages were destroyed, and hundreds of thousands of Kurds killed.

"The Yezidis suffered from the situation more than anybody in Iraq because of our religion first and because of our nationality second," says Hassan, the government official.

Some Yezidis fled to Germany and other countries. But most remained in Iraq, where they were forced from their villages into crowded, squalid compounds. They were denied national identity cards, forbidden to write about their religion and barred from holding government jobs.

Yet Yezidi men were conscripted into Hussein's army and sent to the front lines during the disastrous Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. More than a thousand lost their lives.

After the 1991 Persian Gulf War, American and British fighter planes provided air cover to much of northern Iraq, allowing the Kurds to establish a relatively democratic government independent of Hussein's regime. The 50,000 Yezidis living in so-called "Kurdistan" began to enjoy freedoms they had never known.

Hassan, for example, had graduated from judges' college in Baghdad, but was barred from working in Hussein-controlled southern Iraq. After 1991, he served as a judge in Kurdistan, then became a minister for regional affairs. Hundreds of other Yezidis also got jobs in the Kurdistan government.

Most Yezidis, though, were outside Kurdistan, and for them life remained as grim as it did for the rest of Iraq's people. Until Hussein's regime fell last year, they were even barred from traveling to Lalish Temple, their holiest site.

Now they come by the hundreds to the 930-year-old shrine, deep in the mountains southeast of Dohuk. Here, beneath conical towers that represent the sun's life-giving rays, they stroke the black snake carving by the door and step into smoke-darkened rooms.

Many carry colorful skeins of fabric, an offering to God that they hope will bring good luck or better health. Others sprinkle their hair with water from an underground stream.

Zim-Zim, a cave where baptisms and other holy rites are performed, remains off limits to nonbelievers. But despite their secretive reputation, Yezidis seem willing, even eager, to talk about their faith now that they are free of Hussein.

Malak Ta'us, the chief angel, is represented as a peacock, they explain, because it is a beautiful bird whose feathers include many of the colors found in nature.

The snake is revered by the Yezidis because it saved Noah's Ark from sinking. How? By plugging a leak with its body after the ark hit a mountain.

The reason for not eating lettuce, they say, is because it's unclean, lacking a skin or rind to protect the edible part from dirt.

Yezidism also prohibits wearing blue - a holy color because it is the hue of the sky - and eating roosters. The latter ban is widely ignored, with chicken second only to lamb in popularity at the dinner table.

"In every religion lots of things are forbidden," notes Bozani, director of the Lalish Center. "If you bring a chicken now, I will eat it with you."

But Yezidis still don't marry in April because that is the holy month in which God created the world, they believe. And Yezidis can't marry outside the faith, nor can a non-Yezidi convert.

If Christians and Muslims consider Yezidism strange, the Yezidis find it strange that certain followers of those religions have been so brutal. How can anyone who believes in God, they ask, persecute and kill people who only want to live in peace?

"We respect other religions - everyone who respects God, we respect him," says Hamed, the teacher. "Why can't they respect us?"

Phelps' Group Protests At Soldier's Funeral Fri Aug 5, 7:58 PM ET

Members of the Rev. Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., are picketing military funerals, KMBC's Micheal Mahoney reported Friday.

The group has made national headlines for traveling throughout the country to picket gay churches, gay weddings, and the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student who was murdered in Wyoming in 1998.

Friday, about 15 members of the group -- some of them children -- picketed the funeral of a St. Joseph soldier who was killed in Iraq. Mahoney reported that the group stood across the road from the Grace Evangelical Church during the funeral of 21-year-old Spc. Edward Myers.

"The first sin was being a part of this military. If this young man had a clue and any fear of God, he would have run, and not walked, from this military," said protester Shirley Phelps-Roper. "Who would serve a nation that is godless and has flipped off, defiantly defied, defiantly flipped off, the Lord their God?"

One protester had an American flag tied to his belt that draped to the ground. He was holding a sign that read, "Thank God For IEDs," which are explosive devices used by insurgents to blow up military convoys.

Protesters said America has ignored the word of God, and those who defend the nation must pay a price.

"That's the first piece of solid evidence that you have that the young man is currently in hell," Phelps-Roper said.

"The soldier is in hell now, you believe?" Mahoney asked.

"Absolutely," Phelps-Roper said.

'Protesters Were Rude'

About a dozen veterans stood across the road from the protesters, and Mahoney reported that there were some harsh words and insults traded between the two groups. However, sheriff deputies were stationed about 100 yards away and there was no violence.

"The protesters were so rude -- were disrespectful," said veteran Jim Fields.

"Do I like it? No, I don't. But what can you say, it's a free country," said veteran Dave Campbell.

Veterans told KMBC that a member of the soldier's family shouted at the protesters to leave, and they left about 20 minutes after the funeral started. Mahoney reported that there was applause from veterans and other crowd members when the protesters left.

After the funeral was over, one of the mourners commented on the irony of the protesters showing up at a soldier's funeral.

"They shouldn't protest the funeral for a man who was out there dying to protect the rights that they're demanding they receive," said Marvin Russell.

Russell said he thinks the soldier's family saw the protesters.

"I think it saddened them. They didn't say anything outright, but you could tell by the way they looked down that this was a sad thing to do. They're already in mourning, they don't need people like this to make it worse," Russell said.

Myers was buried with full military honors in Leavenworth National Cemetery. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

One of the protesters said the group is planning to picket other military funerals.

Kurds Should Get Prepared For Secession From Iraq

The large gaps in views over vital issues like Kirkuk, authorities of federal regions, geographic boundaries of Iraqi Kurdistan , distribution of oil wealth and other natural resources, role of Islam, identity of the Iraqi state...etc, between Iraqi Kurds on one side and Iraqi Arabs on the other side ( Both Shiite Arabs and Sunnite Arabs) which surfaced during the ongoing discussions about the drafting of the envisaged permanent Iraqi constitution, raised serious doubts and question marks about the futility of participation by Kurds in this political process when the other side is behaving so obstinately and obviously with bad intentions about all those vital issues mentioned earlier.

The government of Dr Al-Jaafari and before him the government of Dr Allawi are playing delay tactics with Kurds over such crucial issues like implementation of article 58 of Transitional Administrative Law (TAL) of Iraq about Kirkuk and other Arabized Kurdistani regions, and so far have failed to follow any practical steps or to show any good intentions in this regard. On the contrary there have been some steps taken by the Al-Jaafari government which shows a hidden agenda of the Shiite coalition after very secretive and suspicious visits by Al-Jaafari and some prominent Shiite leaders to both Turkey and Iran, both archenemies of Kurdish ambitions for federalism. All these attempt pour in the direction of denying the Kurdistani identity of Kirkuk and forcing an Arab identity and so practically continuing Arabizazion policies of precious regimes, and the Americans and regional countries are complacent.

Many Arab Iraqi politicians are nowadays publicly antagonizing Kurdish demands to include Kirkuk in Kurdistan federal region boundaries and the authorities of Kurdistan regional government and consider such demands as separative intentions as if Iraqi Kurdistan with its current boundaries is a different state and not part of Iraq.

The Iraqi Arabs (Shiites and Sunnis alike) tend to forget or deliberately disregard the facts, that the Iraqi Arabs are all guilty in the crimes of genocide against Iraqi Kurds during the previous Arab governments of Iraq, the genocide of 8000 Barzani men in 1983, the genocide of 182 000 Kurds during Anfall operations of Iraqi army 1987-1988, the genocide of 5 000 innocent civilians with chemical agents in Halabja 1988. The Kurds expect an apology from all Arabs in Iraq and not instead putting hurdles before the just Kurdish demands in the new constitution which are based on undeniable historical and geographic facts and the long suffering of Kurds in Iraq.

The Kurds in Iraq are getting really worried and disappointed about the current state of affairs and the big question is really forcing itself on the Kurds: Is it really worth to participate in such a doomed political process in a country which has never shown any respect for human rights or an Arab nation which in all its 22 states is nowhere near a democracy.

The Kurdish leadership is in a dilemma, on one side they told their people that by participation in building the new Iraq, they will ensure Kurdish rights and on the other side any sensible or intelligent person is seeing that this process is leading nowhere and the confrontation with the new Iraqi regime over Kirkuk and other issue is almost inevitable and that the same tactics adopted by Saddam Hussein during 1970-1975 truce with Iraqi government then, is repeating itself now in an undisguised analogy and that the next Arab military campaigns and genocides are already in planning by the new chauvinistic Islamic rulers of Iraq, this time the Shiites.

It seems that it`s the destiny of Kurds in all parts of Kurdistan to fall so easily to the cunning and false promises of the occupying powers of Kurdistan only to be crushed with brutal force later.

The people of Kurdistan have shown clearly in the referendum which accompanied January 2005 elections that they want an independent Kurdistan (98% voted for an independent Kurdistan and only 2% to remain within Iraq). This is a clear mandate to the Kurdish leadership that they they should pursue secession and not integration in an Arab dominated chauvinistic and repressive state.

The Americans are looking for an exit strategy from Iraq at any price nowadays even if that meant that the Kurdish rights are ignored or that an Islamic state similar to the model of Iran is built in Iraq.

The Kurdish leadership must consider the option of secession seriously and prepare the Kurdish public for the war of independence which is worth fighting anyway , instead of falling again for the treacherous tricks of Iraqi Arabs again.

Gila Monster

Heloderma suspectum

The Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) lives in California, Arizona, New Mexico, et cetera, as well as in Australia.

The Gila monster typically has a black, scaly skin, with orange stripes. Adult lizards are between 18 and 23 inches (46 to 61 centimeters for our metric friends)long. It also can have salmon-colored stripes, and a pale, almost cream-colored body, depending on breed and such. It's heavily built and moves slowly on four short legs, dragging a thick, short, blunt tail. Fat is stored in the tail, and the lizard can live for months on this reserve.

The Gila monster is one of the only poisonous lizards around (the other known poisonous lizard being the Beaded lizard), but it tries to avoid using its poison. Basically, you don't threaten it, it won't kill you.

Gila monsters eat mostly small rodents, juvenile birds, and bird and reptile eggs. In captivity, however, they usually eat chicken eggs or whatnot.

A San Francisco police officer was in serious condition with a head injury and three suspects were in custody Saturday following a demonstration by anarchists who broke windows in the Mission District to protest the gathering of the Group of 8 leaders in Scotland.

Police did not release the name of the officer who was hurt in Friday night's melee. Deputy Police Chief Greg Suhr said Saturday that the officer was in serious but stable condition with brain swelling at San Francisco General Hospital. He has developed a blood clot, which doctors hope to dissolve before he is released, Suhr said.

The department's spokeswoman, Maria Oropeza, said the officer and his partner were driving on 23rd Street in response to a vandalism call when protesters threw a mattress underneath their patrol car.

"They got out to apprehend the suspects, at which point they were surrounded by a crowd," Oropeza said. "One of the officers was struck on the head by an unidentified object."

Police arrested Cody Tarlow, 21, of Felton (Santa Cruz County), Doritt Earnst, 31, of Berkeley and a third suspect who refused to identify himself.

They were being held on suspicion of attempted lynching, malicious mischief, battery to a police officer, aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and willful resistance to a police officer that results in serious bodily injury.

In addition, Tarlow was held on suspicion of wearing a disguise for the purpose of escaping discovery or identification with a public offense. Earnst was also suspected of removing a weapon other than a firearm from an officer, and the unidentified man was suspected of inciting a riot.

A posting on a Web site used by the organizers of Friday's protest said, "The legal team is working on getting (the suspects) attorneys and getting them released! There will be a meeting to organize support for them." The meeting is scheduled for this morning.

The protest was one of many from around the world in response to the summit in Scotland by leaders of wealthy nations -- the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United Kingdom. Representatives from China, India, South Africa, Brazil and Mexico also attended.

The San Francisco protest was billed as the "West Coast Anti-Capitalist Convergence and March against the G-8." Protesters broke windows and glass doors at two Wells Fargo Bank locations, a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant and a shoe store. Red anarchy signs were spray-painted on sidewalks and windows.

Mike Ayesh, manager and co-owner of the Kentucky Fried Chicken in the 1000 block of Valencia Street, said a masked protester threw a hammer through a front window about 9:30 p.m.

Henry Williams, manager of Shoe Biz on the 800 block of Valencia, estimated the cost to replace a cracked 6-foot-by-9-foot window at $1,600.

"I don't know why they targeted the store," Williams said. "We're a small family-owned business, not a big corporation."

By early afternoon, most of the damage from the protest had been fixed or patched up. Newsstand boxes turned over at a number of intersections on Valencia Street had been returned to the sidewalks. Cracked windows had either been replaced or boarded up.

Mission District resident Mike Voight said he didn't know what the demonstration was about. When informed of the reason, he said he was surprised that protesters picked his neighborhood.

"It's so out of context," he said. "Bartlett and 23rd Street is not the place I would chose" to protest the G-8 summit.

President Bush, who met with relatives of fallen soldiers before Tuesday's Fort Bragg speech, was urged to stay the course in Iraq by a woman who gave him a bracelet honoring her late husband.
"I said: 'I know people are pushing you, but please don't pull the guys out of Iraq too soon,' " said Crystal Owen, whose husband, Staff Sgt. Mike Owen, was killed in Iraq last year.
"Don't let my husband -- and 1,700-plus other deaths -- be in vain," she added during a private meeting with Mr. Bush at the North Carolina base. "They were over there, fighting for a democratic nation, and I hope you'll keep our service members over there until the mission can be accomplished."
Mrs. Owen gave the president a stainless steel bracelet engraved with the names of her husband and another soldier, Cpl. John Santos, both of whom were killed on Oct. 15.
The president slipped the bracelet on his left wrist and wore it throughout his 28-minute prime-time address to the nation, becoming visibly emotional at times.
"We have lost good men and women who left our shores to defend freedom and did not live to make the journey home," he said as his eyes turned glassy. "I've met with families grieving the loss of loved ones who were taken from us too soon."
Before his speech, as is his custom, the president met for three hours with more than 90 spouses, children and parents of 32 soldiers killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The last person he met was Mrs. Owen.
"Even though he'd met with 31 other families prior to me, it was like I was the only one -- I mean, he made me feel special," she told The Washington Times yesterday. "He wanted to know about Mike and about me and if I was OK.
"I did get teary-eyed and he kind of held my hands for a while," she added. "He was very sincere and gave me a kiss on the cheek as he left -- I was a little flabbergasted."
The only other people in the room were two Secret Service agents and a photographer for the White House, which declined to release photos.
Mr. Bush has always barred press coverage of his meetings with family members of fallen soldiers.
"It's a time for the president to comfort the families and reassure them that the world is going to be a more peaceful place because of their loved ones," explained White House press secretary Scott McClellan.
"There were a lot of hugs," he said of the Tuesday meeting. "They shared some tears and some laughs."
Mr. Bush has long been criticized by Democrats for not attending the funerals of Americans who have died in the war against terrorism. But White House officials say the president does not want to disrupt public services or create the appearance that he favors one family over another.
The practice began on Sept. 14, 2001, when the president spent hours visiting relatives of those who had been killed in the World Trade Center three days earlier.
During the highly emotional gathering in Manhattan, Mr. Bush alternately laughed and cried with the families, posing for pictures and giving autographs.
Since then, he has continued the somber ritual by meeting with hundreds of relatives of slain soldiers at such military bases as Fort Stewart, Ga.; Fort Polk, La.; and Fort Lewis, Wash.
At Fort Campbell, Ky., in 2004, he met with 133 relatives of 46 fallen service members. While at Fort Hood, Texas, in April, he met with 90 family members of 33 slain soldiers.
The president wept during a meeting one year ago at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida. In December, he posthumously awarded a Bronze Star during a meeting with 50 family members at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Although not all family members agree with the president's policies in Iraq and Afghanistan, many reported being deeply moved by their sessions with him. These include Dave Bader, whose brother, Staff Sgt. Daniel Bader, was killed in Iraq.
"He was just a regular American who came to talk to us," he told the Denver Post after meeting with Mr. Bush at Fort Carson, Colo., in November, 2003. "I was touched by that."
Others used their meetings with the president to counsel perseverance in the face of withering domestic criticism.
"Mike believed in him," Mrs. Owen said. "He was his commander in chief and would have done anything he was ordered to do.
"I was proud to be a military wife," she added. "And I was very honored that the president would take time out to meet with me personally."

The Arab TV news network criticized by the new Iraqi government and others for its anti-American bias and willingness to carry the messages of terrorist organizations, including al-Qaida, is headed for the U.S.-Mexico border to document how easy it is to enter America illegally.

Al-Jazeera has contacted Minuteman Civil Defense Corps leader Chris Simcox to try to arrange interviews. Simcox, who rejected the request for cooperation with the TV network, says al-Jazeera, seen by millions throughout the Arab world and elsewhere, is producing an hour-long documentary news special on lack of security at the U.S. southern border.

Al-Jazeera reporter Naisser Hssaini mentioned the increase in apprehensions of illegal aliens known as OTMs – other than Mexicans. These foreigners increasingly include Arabs, Muslims and others from the Middle East. The reporter also mentioned his familiarity with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement police of catching and releasing OTMS – particularly those not specifically known to be on any terrorist watch list.

“The group has been denied requests for interviews by Minuteman Civil Defense Corps organizers but they still insist on filming the groups’ activities along with the rest of the media during a July 4th weekend mission near Arivaca, Arizona,” said Simcox.

Simcox has contacted the offices of Arizona’s two Republican U.S. senators – John McCain and Jon Kyl – to invite them to do interviews with al Jazeera, “so perhaps they can explain to the viewers of this news outlet just how secure America’s borders really are.”

Up close, these are the nastiest of prisoners

John Krenson is a deacon at The Cathedral in Nashville.

He is married and is raising two small children.

And he loves his country and state so much that he volunteered 19 years ago to serve in the Tennessee Army National Guard. There, he has risen to the rank of major and returned from a year in Afghanistan.

And as an intelligence specialist, he came face to face with the kind of men incarcerated at Guantanamo Bay.

This weekend, the big news media outlets will continue to beat the drum over Gitmo and seek out more congressmen and women to say the facility should be closed. More critics will be given a forum to call Gitmo "a gulag" even though that definition requires thousands to be killed. And comments by Illinois' Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin — comparing our soldiers at Gitmo to Nazis — will be amplified.

Yet someone such as Krenson will not have a broad forum to tell the truth about the war on terror, the circumstances in Afghanistan from which these terrorists came and to defend the good name of our men and women in uniform.

"I worked with people who had worked at Gitmo earlier, I worked with people who worked at the primary detention facility in AFG, and I visited that facility many times. I saw detainees (many times on their prayer rugs, other times reading, other times talking when they were not allowed to). I saw the interrogation rooms. I worked with the soldiers and the leaders who ran this place.

"I know those operations fairly well, and I got to know the people who ran those operations — both active duty and reservists. They are normal Americans. They are good decent people who believed in what they were doing. Americans — including Sen. Durbin — can be and should be proud of them.

"Be assured the worst of the worst detainees are the ones at Gitmo. It took a lot of effort to get a detainee shipped over … . They are no victims. … Their victims are most often Afghan villagers who have risked their lives simply to vote or are construction and aid workers from around the world who are assisting Afghanistan to modernize and develop. The detainees at Gitmo are the ringleaders and verified trigger-pullers in these incidents.

"This is serious business with tens and hundreds of thousands of lives at stake. People have already lost lives because we've released Gitmo detainees. I read those reports, when they were captured — a second time. I can't print the words we used in AFG when we found out a soldier died at the hands of a terrorist released from Gitmo. Gitmo didn't make them want to kill again. Their release allowed them to kill again."

In the war on terror, information saves more lives than tanks. Krenson said he just helped brief 100 Tennessee Guardsmen who will be advisers and trainers to the Afghan National Army throughout Afghanistan and be a big part of election security for upcoming parliamentary elections.

"I saw their bus pull out when they left their families behind, and it took me back to that day when I boarded a bus to leave my family. This time, I knew where those guys were going and what they would be doing. I was proud of them. They are us. These men on that bus were local business owners, school teachers, neighbors, you name it."

Gitmo terrorists want these Guardsmen stopped before more democracy takes root. And their compatriots who are still free would like to kill these Guardsmen without adhering to Geneva Convention rules for combatants to identify themselves and not target civilians. Information from Gitmo terrorists who know these compatriots and their organizations can prevent more deaths.

Americans trust our military to do the right thing — at Gitmo or wherever — in balancing the need for information and also be humane. A recent Gallup poll showed 74% of Americans surveyed expressed trust in the military. That's because the military is us. And more John Krensons returning home alive as deacons in their churches, fathers in their families and heroes in their communities is most important — not the political agendas of U.S. senators and big media. •

Saddam Hussein has not a thread of humanity in him. Every act of his is cold and calculated with an end purpose in mind. He was implicated and later convicted of attempting to assassinate Iraqi prime minister Abdel-Karim Qassem in 1958. Later he was implicated in the mysterious death of his Baathist predecessor Bakar after Baker retired. Shortly after Saddam became president in 1979, he convened a high level Baathist meeting during which he had close allies and friends escorted out of the meeting room and shot, just for being to close to him. Saddam then proceeded to rule Iraq with an Iron fist. He gassed the Kurds, bombed the Shiites, attacked the Iranians, attacked the Kuwaitis, sponsored terrorist camps, financed terrorists, (one of his personal body guards trained in Afghanistan at an Al Qaeda camp), murdered over 1 million Iraqis, maimed, tortured and raped many more for political reasons, orphaned his grandchildren. The list goes on and on.

I've just returned from the Guantanamo Bay (Cuba) Naval Air Station base where we did three shows for the troops and toured several locations around the post visiting with some of the finest military personnel on planet earth.

The kids seemed to really enjoy the shows and especially liked "This Ain't No Rag, It's A Flag" and "In America." We had a great time with them.

We saw Camp X-Ray - where the Taliban detainees are being held - only from a distance, but I picked up a lot of what's going on there from talking with many different people.

The truth of the matter is that this operation is under a microscope. The Red Cross has an on-site presence and watches everything that goes on very closely.

The media is not telling you the whole truth about what's going on over there. The truth is that these scum bags are not only being treated humanely, but they are probably better off health-wise and medically than they've ever been in their lives. They are fed well, able to take showers and receive state-of-the-art medical care. And have their own Moslem chaplain.

I saw several of them where they were being treated in a state-of-the-art medical facility.

Now let's talk about the way they treat our people. First of all, they have to be watched constantly. These people are committed and wanton murderers who are willing to die just to kill someone else. One of the doctors told me that when they had Talibans in the hospital the staff had to really be careful with needles, pens and anything else which could be used as a weapon. They also throw their excrement and urine on the troops who are guarding them. And our guys and gals have shown great restraint in not retaliating.

We are spending over a million dollars a day maintaining and guarding these nasty killers and anyone who wants to see them brought to the U.S.A. for trial is either out of their heads or a lawyer looking for money and notoriety. Or both.

I wish the media and the Red Cross and all the rest of the people who are so worried about these criminals would realize that this is not a troop of errant Boy Scouts. These are killers of the worst kind. They don't need protection from us, we need protection from them.

If you don't get anything else out of this soapbox, please try to realize that when you see news coverage much of the time you're not getting the whole story, but an account filtered through a liberal mindset with an agenda.

We have two fights on our hands, the war against terror and the one against the loud-mouthed lawyers and left-wing media who would sap the strength from the American public by making us believe that we're losing the war or doing something wrong in fighting it. Remember these are the same people who told us that Saddam Hussein's Republican guard was going to be an all but invincible enemy and that our smart bombs and other weapons were not really as good as the military said that they were.

They also took up for Bill Clinton while he was cavorting around the Oval office with Monica Lewinsky while the terrorists were gaining strength and bombing our Embassies and dragging the bodies of dead American heroes around the dusty streets of Somalia.

It's a shame that we can't have an unbiased media who would just report the truth and let us make up our own minds. Here I must commend Fox News for presenting both sides much better than the other networks.

They are leaving the other cable networks in the dust. People want to be told the truth. Our military not only needs but deserves our support. Let's give it to them.

The next time you read a media account about the bad treatment of the Taliban in Cuba, remember what I told you. Been there, done that.

Footnote: I got an e-mail from a rather irate first cousin of mine the other day who has a daughter who's a lawyer, and she seemed to think that I was painting all lawyers with the same brush. Please understand that I'm not doing that at all. That would be like saying that all musicians were drug addicts. There are a lot of good and honest attorneys out there. I happen to have one of them. But it seems that they never get any airtime. It's always the radicals who get their opinions heard, who fight the idea of the military tribunals and cite The Constitution and the integrity of America as the source for justifying their opinions.

Well, first of all The Constitution says, "We the people of the United States," it doesn't mention any other country. And, secondly, as far as integrity is concerned, I don't think some of these folks would know integrity if it bit them in the posterior.

So what does one figure the Republican leadership in the Congress is going to make of the fact that the no. 2 officer at the United Nations, Mark Malloch Brown, whose current annual net salary as an undersecretary general is $125,000 a year, has emerged as the tenant in a house that Mr. Soros owns and that rents for $120,000 a year?

This insight into the cozy arrangement between Kofi Annan's camarilla and Mr. Bush's angriest political enemy was provided by our Benny Avni in his dispatch on Friday. He reports that both sides say the house, cheek by jowl with Mr. Soros's own residence, is being rented at market rate. He quotes a spokesman for the United Nations Development Program as saying that Mr. Malloch Brown is covering the rent from his savings. He notes that Messrs. Soros and Malloch Brown are good friends. Both the Soros camp and Mr. Malloch Brown's defenders insisted to our Mr. Avni that the living arrangement was set up as a "commercial transaction," rather than a gift.

If that's the case, Mr. Malloch Brown, who is probably the United Nations' most promising official, might want to provide some cancelled rent checks to the House Committee on International Relations, just for safekeeping. And probably get a copy to the Senate as well. Over the weekend, the online London Sunday Times quoted Mr. Malloch Brown as saying that although American right-wingers might disapprove of his association with Mr. Soros, "I hope in America you are still allowed to choose your own friends." Well, in America, yes. But on U.N. soil, we'll see. The London Sunday Times also quoted Mr. Malloch Brown as saying the atmosphere at the United Nations has become "entirely like revolutionary France, where the level of backstabbing and betrayal would make Shakespeare wince."

Call this little Thermidor the other side of the fight over Mr. Bush's nomination of John Bolton to be the American permanent representative. While news was surfacing of the Soros-Malloch Brown arrangement, the House of Representatives was voting - 221-to-184 - to halve American funding of the world body if it fails to implement minimal reforms, leaving taxpayers to wonder why, if it fails to implement reforms, they should pay even half. The House did reject an attempt by Rep. Tom Lantos, who has been losing credibility, to water down the measure by giving some discretion to the state secretary. "We have had enough waivers, enough resolutions, enough statements," Rep. Henry Hyde, chairman of international relations, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying. "It's time we had some teeth in reform."

The decision of the House Friday is an expression not only of a loss of confidence in the management of the United Nations but also in permanent bureaucracy at Foggy Bottom, which has been opposing the House's efforts to get tough. Why would Mr. Lantos think that if the Congress wanted to get tough with the United Nations it would hand the decision on whether to get tough over to a state department that has been opposing the idea of getting tough all along? In any event, the fight over funding the United Nations is going to move now to the Senate, where the lead on the issue will fall to Norman Coleman, who has been the most outspoken advocate of the idea that to enable the start of real reform at the United Nations, Secretary-General Annan should resign.

All this is a context in which it would be prudent, just in the fiduciary sense, for our representatives in Albany to wait to see what kind of financial shape the United Nations will be in before they let a state development corporation go on the hook for the financing of a temporary headquarters in Manhattan. We thought Tina Brown had it just right in her column Thursday; the power brokers in New York are not going to be a help to ordinary taxpaying New Yorkers in this fight. And if Mr. Annan needs someone to finance its temporary headquarters while it renovates its tower on the East River, maybe he can get Mr. Malloch Brown to get his neighbor, Mr. Soros, to lend a hand. If the Congress cuts American dues and the rent check is late, our guess is that Mr. Soros would be the forgiving sort.

KARABILA, Iraq - Marines on an operation to eliminate insurgents that began Friday broke through the outside wall of a building in this small rural village to find a torture center equipped with electric wires, a noose, handcuffs, a 574-page jihad manual - and four beaten and shackled Iraqis.
The American military has found torture houses after invading towns heavily populated by insurgents - like Falluja, where the anti-insurgent assault last fall uncovered almost 20 such sites. But rarely have they come across victims who have lived to tell the tale.

The men said they told the marines, from Company K, Third Marines, Second Division, that they had been tortured with shocks and flogged with a strip of rubber for more than two weeks, unseen behind the windows of black glass. One of them, Ahmed Isa Fathil, 19, a former member of the new Iraqi Army, said he had been held and tortured there for 22 days. All the while, he said, his face was almost entirely taped over and his hands were cuffed.

In an interview with an embedded reporter just hours after he was freed, he said he had never seen the faces of his captors, who occasionally whispered at him, "We will kill you." He said they did not question him, and he did not know what they wanted. Nor did he ever expect to be released.

"They kill somebody every day," said Mr. Fathil, whose hands were so swollen he could not open a can of Coke offered to him by a marine. "They've killed a lot of people."

From the house on Saturday, there could be heard sounds of fighting from the large-scale offensive to eliminate strongholds of insurgents, many of whom stream across Iraq's porous border with Syria.

As the marines walked through the house - a squat one-story building of sand-colored brick - the broken black window glass crunched under their boots. Light poured in, revealing walls and ceiling shredded by shrapnel from the blast they had set off to break in through a wall. Latex gloves were strewn on the floor. A kerosene lantern lay on its side, shattered.

The manual recovered - a fat, well-thumbed Arabic paperback - listed itself as the 2005 First Edition of "The Principles of Jihadist Philosophy," by Abdel Rahman al-Ali. Its chapters included "How to Select the Best Hostage," and "The Legitimacy of Cutting the Infidels' Heads."

Also recovered were several fake passports, a black hood, the painkiller Percoset, handcuffs and an explosives how-to-guide. Three cars loaded with explosives were parked in a garage outside the house. The marines blew them up...

Turkish Tabloid Enrages Germany with Nazi Comparisons.

Turkey is suffering something of an image problem in Europe these days. First came those unfortunate and truly appalling images of riot police using truncheons, tear gas and brute force against a group of women demonstrating for equal rights to mark World Women’s Day last week. Then came the women’s claims that they are so used to being kicked around that they consider it normal; they professed awe that the rest of the world found the TV images outrageous. Now, yet another scuffle — this one involving German Interior Minister Otto Schily — has Europe wondering if maybe Turkey, which badly wants membership in the European club, isn’t, as many detractors claim, too much of a jellyfish on human rights and otherwise unprepared to be welcomed into Europe.

The latest brouhaha circles around Schily — known in Germany as Iron Otto for his stern, no nonsense efficiency — and his successful push to ban a radical Turkish tabloid called Vakit from German newsstands. The paper regularly publishes inflammatory and often anti-Semitic statements, Schily charged. Indeed, in a Dec. 2004 article, the tabloid stated, “There was no Holocaust. The so-called gas chambers are also a lie. It’s nothing more than Zionist music.”

The ban — which is completely legal according to a German law forbidding the denial of the Holocaust — took effect in February. Now, Vakit has launched an over-the-top smear campaign that equates Schily with Hitler, an infamous media hater who closed all outlets that disagreed with his fanatical views. For seven days in a row, the tabloid has featured scathing stories depicting Schily as an anti-free-speech tyrant. One shows him with a black swastika on his arm, another poses him in front of a Nazi flag and in a third, a cartoonist has drawn a Hitler mustache on him. In a March 4 cover story, he appears under the blaring headline “Heil Otto! The Oven is Ready.” Germany may be well on its way to digesting its Nazi past, but one truism remains: If you want to rile up a German — particularly a male political leader — connect him to Hitler.

Was World War II worth it?

In the inflammatory world view of Pat Buchanan, the short answer is no. The war that stopped the Nazis' global campaign and the mechanistic extermination of European Jewry was actually not worth the effort.

The commentator yesterday offered equally provocative answers to other questions: Why destroy Hitler? And why venerate FDR and Churchill?

On the radio and Internet, Buchanan framed his positions as amplification of remarks made over the weekend by President George W. Bush that the pact ending the war brought on a Stalinist domination that was "one of the greatest wrongs of history."

But Buchanan's comments on the Don Imus radio show and in an essay posted on the Web site of his organization, The American Cause, went much further. He suggested that because Germans voted Hitler in, they did not need to be liberated, and that Britain and France drew Germany into the wider conflict.

He did not mention Jews or the Holocaust - the most outrageous omission for Yaffa Eliach, a Holocaust expert and survivor. "For me it is very important to present the truth, to show the murder," Eliach said. "The idea was to kill Jews."

Abraham Foxman, president of the Anti-Defamation League, called Buchanan's comments "immoral" and "bordering on Holocaust denial. "But, you know, he has been there before," Foxman said. "Pat Buchanan in the past has challenged whether or not there were crematoria."

Veterans were also insulted.

"That is more or less saying they fought for the wrong reasons and the sacrifice was futile," said Veterans of Foreign Wars spokesman Jerry Newberry. "Buchanan apparently hasn't given much thought to what the world would have looked like if Hitler and his henchmen would have succeeded."

Buchanan did not return calls yesterday.

Former Mayor Ed Koch offered this blunt rebuttal: "I believe that no decent human being should ever sit down at the same table with Pat Buchanan and I am shocked that otherwise responsible, respectable citizens share platforms with him on Sunday shows."

The main Remembrance Day memorial will take place Wednesday at Jerusalem's Mount Herzl and simultaneously at 43 military cemeteries around the country. A two-minute siren will sound at 11 a.m. A ceremony will also take place at the memorial for fallen Beduin soldiers at the Hamovil junction in the Galilee.

The prime minister is to speak at Mount Herzl. Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz will speak at Tel Aviv's Kiryat Shaul.

Remembrance Day is to be marked officially by lighting memorial flames and placing wreaths on graves. The Defense Ministry has already placed a miniature flag on the graves of all the fallen soldiers in military cemeteries across the country. In addition, black memorial ribbons will also be placed on the graves.

This year is the second year that the Defense Ministry has provided a service to make it easier to locate the graves of the fallen. It not only provides the block and parcel of a fallen soldier's grave, but also gives a map of the best route to take from the gates of the military cemeteries.

The service is available on a special Web site sponsored by the Defense Ministry's Department for Commemorating Soldiers and programmed by a civilian firm.

The site can be reached at: www.izkor.gov.il/izkor80.htm. It is only in Hebrew and there are no plans to provide it in other languages for the moment, defense officials said.

The site requests a name, even partial, and it then provides the biography of the fallen, a photo and the circumstances of his death. Two maps are also available; one a general map of the military cemetery with the suggested route to the grave, the other of the block with the grave clearly marked.

Mourners who have difficulty walking but who want to visit graves at military cemeteries can call Yad Sarah for help. Its wheelchair-accessible vans will take the disabled at no cost to and from military cemeteries at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, Kiryat Shaul in Tel Aviv, Segula in Petah Tikva and in Haifa, Netanya and Beersheba. The service has been arranged in cooperation with the Defense Ministry and Yad Lebanim. Call 1-700-501-800 in advance.

Israel mourns its fallen

The nation bowed its head Tuesday evening, Remembrance Day, mourning the 20,368 servicemen and women who have fallen in its defense since November 1947.

Including all those who fell defending the Land of Israel since 1860, the number reaches 21,954.

In the past year, 169 members of the police, IDF, Border Police, Prisons Service, Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) and other organizations have been killed in the service of the state.

Remembrance Day officially began Tuesday evening, when President Moshe Katsav opened the ceremony at the Western Wall. Representatives of bereaved parents and IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Moshe Ya'alon were attending the ceremony.

A one-minute siren sounded across the country at 8 p.m., as citizens stopped in silent commemoration.

"Tonight all the people of Israel are standing in silent, bowing our heads, filled with pain and agony," President Katsav told the crowd at the Wall.

"The torches we are lighting today here are like the eternal candle that was lit in the Temple, a light which was never put off; it lights our faith in the future. We choose to remember the fallen here, at the kotel, where our temple once stood.

"The price we paid for independence was extremely high. We are making every effort that the next generation will be able to put down the guns.

"We are again facing difficult and complex decisions. There are many hardships on the way to peace – but we shall walk toward it, side by side.

"Tonight, as fresh flowers are put on the graves, there are no disagreements. We forget all internal strife and remember: We are one people. We are one nation, with one past and one destiny.

"The fallen have given us the most precious thing in the world. We make a vow today to be worthy of their memory."

In his address, Chief of Staff Ya'alon vowed never to forget.

"A nation which knows the price of independence gathers tonight at our eternal capital to remember those who fell in the service of the state. Silent members in our nation that paid with their lives.

"We came to remember those who will always remain young in our imagination, so near but yet so far."

The commander of the IDF added, "As chief of staff and throughout 37 years of service, I have always been with you dear families, in every step I take and in every decision I make.

"Today, the day we engrave in our hearts. We remember those who paid with their lives; from the city, village, kibbutz, whether new Olim, Beduin, Circassians and Druse. Today, we came to acknowledge that we are here because of their sacrifice."

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon spoke earlier Tuesday, at a ceremony for the fallen ,of his personal grief as a former soldier and commander.

"I see the faces of my friends, my commanders and those who served under my command - familiar faces covered in dust, furrowed in effort. I hear voices cut off by the sound of metal, a deafening boom of explosions. I smell the sweat and fire of the battlefield. In the soul of every fighter and every commander who led soldiers, are many friends, and each of them hold a warm place in their heart, like an album with photographs which have yellowed over the years, but still show a refreshing view of other, nostalgic times.

"Your pain is our pain, your grief is our grief, because the fallen are precious children to us all, and for us they gave their lives. They are deserving of eternal gratitude and eternal glory. Israel's magnificence, which includes 57 years of independence and accomplishments unprecedented among nations - is thanks to them.

Anti-Semitism in Turkey

Historically anti-Semitism all most always has been related to general intolerance, racism, and xenophobia. In modern Turkey this elements have the main ingredients of foundation of the Turkish Republic. In republican era there have been up and down with anti-Semitism and some times high-ranking government officials have been speaking positively about Jews and Israel and even claming to be protectors of the Jewish minority in Turkey. However, in recent years anti-Semitism and racism become very dangerous, and not just targeted to small minority of Jews in Turkey but to the “Donme” the Jews that were converted about 300 years ago to Islam and “Turkism”, and to Jews in general.

In the past Jews were forced to relocation in 1924, forced to pay higher taxes or forced to bankruptcy by force of government, for example in 1942 infamous “Wealth Tax” that directed to non-Muslim minorities. In 1955 they were targeted in Istanbul together Greek and Armenians. In late 1980s and in 1990s Jewish or “Donme” business people were subject of “Ulkucu Mafia” a state sponsored extreme rights group was taking money from Jews by force and illegally. Some Jewish businessman had to move to the USA and Israel.

However, recent anti-Semitism is more dangerous, in the past it was limited to small marginal leftist, Marxist, Islamist, and fascist groups, and all most of them were controlled by the state; now anti-Semitism is becoming a mass movement like 1930s Europe. Some people seemed surprised to see Hitler’s book become best seller, in reality there are many more anti-Semitics books and articles recently have been published and they are more dangerous than Hitler’s book. For example, the Dr. Yalicin Kucuk a former Marxist his book titled “Tekelistan” about Jews and specifically about donme, it has more conspiracy in it than Hitler’s book. This book become so popular he had to write several other books and among many other Pan-Turkist/Pan-Islamists become Dr. Kucuk’s main readers. In addition Yalcin Soner’s book about “Done” was one of the best seller in Turkey for long time. Mr. Soner’s book is comparable with Dr. Kucuk’s book. All major newspapers are daily full with anti-Semitic remarks. These conspiracies includes Jews or “hidden Jews” been in charge of the Turkish state, been behind separatist movements, Islamist movements, been in charge of America, or Israel Zionist conspiracy to take over South Eastern part of Turkey. The type of conspiracy dependent to the ideology of the writers, for example if an Islamist write like Sevket Eygi he will claim Turkey’s ethnic conflict is invention of the Jews, Kemalist-nationalist will claim Jews are in charge of America and they try to divide Turkey, and so on. Fighting against ant-Semitism is as important as fighting against Nazism, neo-Nazism or any totalitarian regime or ideology. One of the important ways fighting against anti-Semitism in Turkey is defending freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom of assembly, and Western pluralistic democracy.

In 2001, a team of Israeli, German, and Indian scientists discovered that the majority of Jews around the world are closely related to the Kurdish people -- more closely than they are to the Semitic-speaking Arabs or any other population that was tested. The researchers sampled a total of 526 Y-chromosomes from 6 populations (Kurdish Jews, Kurdish Muslims, Palestinian Arabs, Sephardic Jews, Ashkenazic Jews, and Bedouin from southern Israel) and added extra data on 1321 persons from 12 populations (including Russians, Belarusians, Poles, Berbers, Portuguese, Spaniards, Arabs, Armenians, and Anatolian Turks). Most of the 95 Kurdish Muslim test subjects came from northern Iraq. Ashkenazic Jews have ancestors who lived in central and Eastern Europe, while Sephardic Jews have ancestors from southwestern Europe, northern Africa, and the Middle East. The Kurdish Jews and Sephardic Jews were found to be very close to each other. Both of these Jewish populations differed somewhat from Ashkenazic Jews, who mixed with European peoples during their diaspora.

Research has just begun into the ancient ties between Kurds and Jews. It would be interesting to see if the various Jewish groups have as strong a family tie to Kurds in the maternal lineages as they do in the paternal lineages. Preliminary studies indicate that Jewish populations in Eastern Europe and Yemen have maternal origins that contain much more non-Israelite ancestry than their paternal origins. Despite this admixture with other groups, the Jewish Judean people ultimately began their existence in an area within or nearby Kurdistan, prior to migrating southwest to Israel. This exciting research showing that Kurds and Jews may have shared common fathers several millennia ago should, hopefully, encourage both Kurds and Jews to explore each others' cultures and to maintain the friendship that Kurds and Jews enjoyed in northern Iraq in recent times (as chronicled in Michael Rubin's recent article "The Other Iraq"). As Rubin indicates, the Kurdish leader Mullah Mustafa Barzani once visited Israel and met with Israeli government officials. Rubin refers to the Iraqi Kurds' "special affinity for Israel" and writes that "In the safe haven of Iraqi Kurdistan, the Jews and Israel are remembered fondly, if increasingly vaguely." Let us hope that this relationship can be renewed and strengthened.

Sadly, a fleeting glance at the history of Iraq since its independence ascertains that the 2,700-year-old Iraqi Jewish community has suffered horrible persecution, particularly as the Zionist drive for a state intensified. In June 1941, the Mufti-inspired, pro-Nazi coup of Rashid Ali sparked rioting and a pogrom in Baghdad. Armed Iraqi mobs, with the complicity of the police and the army, murdered 180 Jews and wounded almost 1,000. Additional outbreaks of anti-Jewish rioting occurred between 1946-49. After the establishment of Israel in 1948, Zionism became a capital crime.

In 1950, Iraqi Jews were permitted to leave the country within a year provided they forfeited their citizenship. A year later, however, the property of Jews who emigrated was frozen and economic restrictions were placed on Jews who chose to remain in the country. From 1949 to 1951, 104,000 Jews were evacuated from Iraq in Operations Ezra & Nechemia; another 20,000 were smuggled out through Iran.

With the rise of competing Ba'ath factions in 1963, additional restrictions were placed on the remaining Iraqi Jews. The sale of property was forbidden and all Jews were forced to carry yellow identity cards. After the Six-Day War, more repressive measures were imposed: Jewish property was expropriated; Jewish bank accounts were frozen; Jews were dismissed from public posts; businesses were shut; trading permits were cancelled; telephones were disconnected. Jews were placed under house arrest for long periods of time or restricted to the cities.

Persecution was at its worst at the end of 1968. Scores were jailed upon the discovery of a local "spy ring" composed of Jewish businessmen. Fourteen men - eleven of them Jews - were sentenced to death in staged trials and hanged in the public squares of Baghdad; others died of torture. On January 27, 1969, Baghdad Radio called upon Iraqis to "come and enjoy the feast." Some 500,000 men, women and children paraded and danced past the scaffolds where the bodies of the hanged Jews swung.

Saddams pursuit for nuclear, possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction, funding the militant Palestinian accelerated the initiative that he is an immense threat to Israel national security and him and his Baath party has to be dealt with military force. To achieve this goal, The United States and Israel turned to their long-term allies for aid. Key architects of the pre-emptive and military use of force to push the invasion of Iraq were the Jewish neo-conservative members of congress and the influence of American-Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), long considered one of the most lobbying groups. At present, Israeli intelligence and military operatives are at work in Kurdistan, providing training for Kurdish commando units and, most important in Israel’s view, running covert operations inside Kurdish areas of Iran and Syria. Israel feels particularly threatened by Iran, whose position in the region has been strengthened by the war. Israel is concerned the United States will not be successful in stabilizing Iraq after the transfer of sovereignty on June 30, and the elections scheduled for January 2005. Many of the agents in the region are believed to be Mossad operatives investigating Iran's nuclear capabilities. The former Israeli intelligence officer acknowledged that since late last year Israel has been training Kurdish commando units to operate in the same manner and with the same effectiveness as Israel’s most secretive commando units, the Mistaravim. Kurds are offering the biggest sacrifices for their Allies in the ongoing war. They are performing the toughest tasks that American commando units had been unable to do—penetrate, gather intelligence on, and then neutralize the leadership of the Shiite and Sunni insurgencies in Iraq. The Kurdish-Israeli collaboration inevitably expanded, the Israeli said. Some Israeli operatives have crossed the border into Iran, accompanied by Kurdish commandos, to install sensors and other sensitive devices that primarily target suspected Iranian nuclear facilities.

The Kurdish residents of the safe haven envision a region where Jews and Kurds live in absolute peace, and not only accept Israel, but also uphold the Jewish state’s success as a model to be implemented in their own troubled land. As one university professor commented, "What we want is to get rid of Saddam so that we can do what the Jews did in Israel. We have a Diaspora. People will work furiously hard. All we need is security." A Kurdish pharmacist from Baghdad, visiting friends in the safe haven, told how a mullah who had come to fill a prescription had commented that he would "welcome an Israeli flag over Baghdad so long as they threw out Saddam and then left us to our business. We couldn’t care less about Arab nationalism," the mullah told the pharmacist. "We’re not crazy like Syria. We just want to rebuild our country. Israel has expressed its strong support for the creation of an independent Kurdistan. Independence for Kurdistan purports debilitation of Arab nationalism, foiling Turkeys prop-up and security declaration for Israel.

King Abdullah II is deeply preoccupied in restructuring governance in his realm according to a self-designed pattern of democracy. This revolutionary process is going forward quietly step by step. This month, he appointed a new government shorn of policy-making authority in the fields of foreign affairs, defense and home security, prerogatives that will pass to the royal court. Furthermore, he is acting to decentralize parliament in Amman.

But along with these radical reforms, the Jordanian king’s peripheral sight is fixed on his western neighbor. He has not missed Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas’s descent deeper day by day into the morass of disorder and revolt.

Last Tuesday, April 11, US president George W. Bush and Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon debated the chances of propping Abbas’ rule up against collapse. Next Thursday, two senior American officials, deputy head of the national security council Elliott Abrams and undersecretary of state for Near East affairs David Welch, will be visiting Jerusalem and Ramallah to try and determine its feasibility.

But according to our Amman sources, Abdullah thinks the Palestinian Authority under Abu Mazen is sinking rapidly and may be beyond saving. What interests him most is the July 17 Palestinian election and its potential impact on stability in his kingdom given his large Palestinian population. Hamas’ prospects of sweeping the election improve as Abbas weakens. Of one thing Abdullah is certain: he cannot afford a Hamas takeover of Palestinian government in the West Bank and Gaza. The Palestinian Hamas terrorist group is not isolated or autonomous; it is a branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, a worldwide jihadist movement which is strongest in the Arab world. A Brotherhood-dominated government in Ramallah would point a knife at the Hashemite throne in Amman.

Abdullah is therefore turning over the possibility of Jordan moving in to fill the power vacuum that would be formed on the West Bank by Abu Mazen’s downfall.

Last week, the Jordanian ruler set up a new body called the Commission for Determining Jordan’s National Agenda. Its eight sub-committees were entrusted with drafting new laws for the redistribution of legislative authority among provincial parliaments still to be created.

DEBKAfile’s Amman sources reveal that the king has decided on three provincial parliaments for Irbid in the north, Salt in the center and Kerak in the south. Each will elect a government to administer the province.

A royal decree will cut down the central parliament in Amman from 110 to 80 seats. Two more royal reforms are of critical importance.

1. He has adopted the Ottoman Empire’s term wilaya for the new provinces. DEBKAfile’s experts note that the historical term pertained to large territories, often whole countries. All biblical Palestine was one; Iraq, two.

2. The new cabinet headed by Adnan Badran that was sworn in April 7 has one third more Palestinian ministers than the former Fayez government. However, the only post with real authority was awarded the Palestinian-Jordanian economist Basem Abdallah, whose job it is to reform the economy. The Bedouin tribes of the south and their 34 deputies in the national assembly are protesting bitterly over the increment in jobs for the Palestinians at their expense. The king has not taken them into his confidence about his plans to empty many of the government’s functions of content and share out legislative powers among provinces. He wants to see the process in place before it is unveiled.

As for the West Bank, the Jordanian king would not be surprised if a breakdown of the Abbas government in Ramallah produced an invitation from Washington, pro-Jordanian elements among the Palestinians - and even possibly Israel, for him to step in and sort out the mayhem in the West Bank.

Such an invitation might lead to consideration of a plan to make the territory the Jordanian kingdom’s fourth wilaya. The Palestinian Authority already has a muqataa - the Ottoman Empire’s term for a governing administration under the Sultan. It would retain broad powers in such local fields of operation as employment, education, and general services to the population, while West Bank representatives would be integrated in the Palestinian faction of the disempowered central parliament in Amman.

Abdullah’s aides are seeking to muster a majority of royalist supporters for the three Jordanian provincial governments. The headhunt is led by Jordan’s elder statesman Zeid al-Rifai, many times prime minister in Amman, his son, Samir Rifai, one of the king’s closest advisers, and the speaker of parliament, Abd al Hadi Majali.

DEBKAfile’s Washington sources have no doubt that the king discussed his West Bank concept with Bush during their White House talks in March. Neither gave the game away in their public appearances later. The president only praised “His Majesty’s” steps for democracy in general terms, making no commitments. He may have set Abdullah’s suggestion aside as a possible Plan B for consideration if the Palestinian Authority crisis becomes terminal. Our American sources are certain Sharon was clued in on the Jordanian option when he visited the presidential ranch in Texas last week.

Whatever becomes of this as yet unformed notion, a Jordanian-Palestinian province on the West Bank might open up some fresh thinking on ways of keeping some Jewish settlement blocs in situ – if not under full Israeli sovereignty then at least under Israeli administration – under give-and-take accords.

Anti-American notes found in pack of Wellington GI accused of deserting Army

WELLINGTON -- An Army sergeant who left his Georgia post six months ago was tracked down at his parents' home after a notebook with anti-American and anti-Semitic writings was found in his discarded backpack.

Karim Iraq, 25, was arrested as a deserter and is being held without bail at the Palm Beach County Jail, sheriff's officials said.

His father said the soldier fled Fort Stewart after the Army extended his enlistment because he had soured on the U.S. military mission in Iraq. The father said the soldier was also harassed over his Palestinian heritage.

``He was feeling rejected or discriminated against for the last year or so.... He said he'd been made fun of all of the time. He never fit in. They made fun of his name. They always looked at him like he's an outsider,'' Zayed Iraq said.

Karim Iraq was arrested Tuesday, a day after the backpack was found Monday at a gas station within miles of his parents' home in this West Palm Beach suburb. The father said the bag was probably left there by a burglar who had broken into the soldier's truck days earlier.

Authorities said a notebook inside the backpack contained handwritten notes cursing the military, freedom and the United States. A message reading ``Die you know who you are!!!'' appears with an image of the Star of David in a circle with a line through it.

``He's a dangerous guy with anti-American slogans and a deserter. It's someone we want to get off the street immediately,'' sheriff's Capt. Gregory Richter said.

Zayed Iraq said his Detroit-born son was proud of his service in Iraq and Kuwait on two previous tours but had become disenchanted and did not want to go back to the Middle East for a third time.

``It's not like he hates the U.S. He's been here all his life. It's the only country he ever knew. Half the country doesn't agree with the president,'' Zayed Iraq said.

Iraq's commander will determine whether he faces administrative punishment or a court-martial.

For administrative purposes, the Army classifies a soldier as a deserter if he fails to report for duty for more than 30 days. However, that doesn't necessarily mean criminal charges of desertion will be brought.

Military law defines desertion as fleeing military service with no intention to return or to ``avoid hazardous duty or to shirk important service.''

If he is court-martialed, the maximum penalty under normal circumstances is up to five years in prison. During war, the maximum penalty is death, but no U.S. deserters have been executed since World War II.

Judy Orihuela, spokeswoman for the FBI's Miami office, said the matter was being handled by the military.

The al-Anfal Campaign was the anti-Kurdish campaign lead by the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein, spanned between February and September 1988. The campaign takes its name from surat Al-Anfal in the Qur'an, which was used as a code name by the former Iraqi Baathist regime for a genocidal campaign against the Kurdish community of southern Kurdistan.

The entire campaign, which began in 1986 and lasted until 1989, and is said to have cost the lives of 182,000 civilian Kurds by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. The campaign was headed by Ali Hasan al-Majid, a cousin of the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Anfal's use of firing squads, mass deportation (Arabization), and chemical weapons earned al-Majid the nickname "Chemical Ali". The campaign included the Halabja poison gas attack, which is thought to have killed about 5,000 civilians. Arabization was a tactic used by Saddam's regime to drive Kurdish families out of their homes in cities like Kirkuk, which are high in oil. The al-Anfal campaign also involved kidnapping of young Kurdish girls by Iraqi soldiers and killing and torturing of Kurdish families.

A man who was an intelligence officer in the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein committed suicide after news that Jalal Talabani was sworn in as President of Iraq.

Captain Hatem Ahmad al-Shallal shot himself in the village of Daqouq, 60 kilometres south of Kirkuk, the source quoted al-Shallal's relatives as saying.

The officer had been "in an abnormal hysterical state" since Mr Talabani was sworn in as President last Thursday.

"He could not accept the idea of a non-Arab as President of an Iraqi state," the source quoted the relatives as saying.

Mr Talabani, a Kurd, is an old foe of Saddam.

After the 1991 Gulf war, he helped lead a full-scale uprising against Saddam, resulting in a US-backed autonomous Kurdish enclave in the north.

When its finest novelist attacked Turkey’s bloody past, he became a hero for Armenians and Turks alike, says Nouritza Matossiann

There is a Turkish saying: ’A sword won’t cut without inspiration from the pen.’

Orhan Pamuk, wielder of Turkey’s finest pen, has spoken and cut a swath through his country’s conscience. His most recent novel Snow was set in Kars and peppered with references to the Armenian culture of that formerly Armenian city. Brilliant novelist, translated in 20 languages, winner of international prizes, he has become a hate figure.

His crime was one sentence in an interview with the Swiss newspaper Tagesanzeiger this month. ’Thirty thousand Kurds and a million Armenians were killed in Turkey. Almost no one dares speak but me, and the nationalists hate me for that.’ All hell broke loose. The press attacked him for dishonouring the Turkish state and incitement to racial violence. He has been called a liar, ’a miserable creature’ and a ’black writer’ in the daily Hurriyet. Professor Hikmet Ozdemir, head of the Armenian studies department at the Turkish Union of Historians, rejected his statement as a ’great lie’.

A lone voice, Halil Berktay, professor at Sabanci University, supported Pamuk: ’In 1915-16 about 800,000 or one million Armenians were killed for sure.’

Mehmet ـçok, an attorney, filed charges at the Kayseri public prosecutor’s office. Another charge was filed by Kayseri Bar Association attorney Orhan Pekmezci: ’Pamuk has made groundless claims against the Turkish identity, the Turkish military and Turkey as a whole. He should be punished for violating Articles 159 and 312 of the Turkish penal code. He made a statement provoking the people to hatred and animosity through the media, which is defined as a crime in Article 312.’

I find this ironic. My mother’s family was deported from the historic Armenian city of Kayseri, leaving their murdered menfolk behind.

I was recently in Istanbul lecturing on my biography of Armenian-American artist Arshile Gorky, the basis for the controversial genocide movie Ararat. Official permission for my talk required me not to utter the word ’genocide’ to refer to the Ottoman empire’s systematic deportations, tortures and killings of two million Armenians which Gorky witnessed. I might refer to those ’incidents’. The crime has never been acknowledged by successive Turkish governments, Britain or the United States.

Recent discussions of Turkey’s possible entry into the EU were dominated by France and other countries demanding that Turkey first admit the Armenian genocide. What if Britain had a law forbidding criticism of its history, identity, or the armed forces? Turkey has far to go to reach the legal standards of EU members, with their humane and non-discriminatory laws aiming at standards of truth and reason. So much hatred. So much anger. What does Turkey have to hide?

’Pamuk has always defended freedom of speech and thought, the rights of minorities,’ writes Hrant Dink, owner of the Armenian Turkish-language weekly Agos. ’For 90 years we Armenians have been abused, insulted and discriminated against. We cannot enter certain professions, we Turkified our names. We have learnt to survive and endure without protest. Maybe it is time that the Turkish people also learnt tolerance and endurance from us.’

In London, a thinly veiled propaganda exercise at the Royal Academy trumpets Turkish empires, making far-reaching claims about the origins of the ’Turkic peoples’. Echoes of master-race ideology. Pamuk himself writes in the Academy journal: ’Turks gripped by romantic myths of nationalism are keen to establish that we come from Mongolia or central Asia... scholars have come no closer to offering definitive or convincing evidence to link us with a particular time and place.’

In the show the contributions of other nationals in the Ottoman empire - Armenians, Greeks and Jews - are not credited. Yet their handiwork is everywhere, in architecture, pottery, carpets, manuscripts.

Britain colludes in this travesty for the sake of oil interests in Azerbaijan, Turkey’s closest ally.

Akin Birdal, vice-president of the International Federation of Human Rights Leagues, emphasises: ’No matter we have come to the 90th year of "incidents" Orhan Pamuk talked about, these will of course be discussed on domestic and international platforms. The aggressions carried out against Pamuk are those which have been carried out against thought. Pamuk is not alone.’ Pamuk has cut the Gordian knot. He has become the hero of every right-thinking person in Turkey and every Armenian worldwide.

Ahenakew says he still believes Jews started Second World War

SASKATOON (CP) - David Ahenakew told his hate trial Tuesday that he still believes Jews were the cause of the Second World War and he doesn't think there is anything wrong with his opinion.

The former head of the Assembly of First Nations and member of the Order of Canada is charged under the Criminal Code with wilfully promoting hatred against an identifiable group after he made public his opinions in a speech to a Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations' conference more than two years ago.

"I didn't think I said anything wrong during my speech," Ahenakew testified under cross-examination by Crown prosecutor Brent Klause.

Klause pointed to the interview Ahenakew had with a reporter right after the speech where he called the Jews a "disease" and said Hitler was justified when he "fried six million of those guys."

"So you stand by your comments?" Klause asked.

"Yeah," Ahenakew replied.

Ahenakew, 71, testified it was the Germans who told him about the Jews when he served overseas in the military. He joined the military in 1951.

His testimony was the culmination of a day filled with tension. Agitated members of the public gallery at points yelled "racist" as Klause asked questions of Ahenakew in front of Judge Marty Irwin, who is hearing the case without a jury.

Ahenakew's defence lawyer, Doug Christie, in turn attacked the media for its reporting on the case.

The jeers against Klause came when he suggested to Ahenakew: "You are not an unsophisticated individual from some remote northern band."

Irwin asked Klause to re-phrase the question, which he did, but at the morning break he was approached by at least one individual who swore at him and told him he was offended by the remark.

Klause returned after the break and apologized to the court. But the decorum in the gallery didn't improve and in the afternoon, Klause had to ask the judge to put a stop to remarks being made.

"This is not a circus," Klause said, prompting Irwin to ask everyone for quiet.

Ahenakew was on the stand Tuesday in support of his lawyer's application to have tapes of both the reporter's interview and his speech thrown out as evidence.

Christie had argued both were private conversations and can't be used in the prosecution of a hate crime.

But Irwin disagreed, saying Ahenakew knew or should have known that his speech to about 300 people and his remarks to a reporter could end up being published.

"Reporters report," Irwin said. "It's not for the court to pass judgment on the journalistic ethics of the media."

Outside the courtroom, Christie told reporters that the ruling makes the media a tool of a police state.

"This is a setback for anybody who doesn't want to see the media get a licence to promote hatred if they can find someone in a moment of passion to quote," Christie said.

"You are now capable of being used to, not only promote hatred with impunity, but to gather evidence against people in private conversations to be used against them indiscriminately. I wouldn't want to be in your position."

Irwin listened to the both the tape of Ahenakew's speech, made by the FSIN, and the tape of his comments to the reporter, James Parker of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, in deciding the merits of Christie's application.

"How do you get rid of a disease like that, that's going to take over, that's going to dominate?" Ahenakew told Parker. "The Jews damn near owned all of Germany prior to the war. That's how Hitler came in. He was going to make damn sure that the Jews didn't take over Germany or Europe.

"That's why he fried six million of those guys, you know. Jews would have owned the God damned world. And look what they're doing. They're killing people in Arab countries."

Ahenakew testified that he believes he was goaded into making his remarks by Parker and called their conversation a confrontation rather than an interview.

Parker has already testified that he heard Ahenakew mention the Jews in his speech and was seeking clarification when he approached him.

Ahenakew called Parker's subsequent story a "blatant distortion" but offered little explanation as to why he thinks that.

"What it says to me is they (the media) are out to destroy," Ahenakew said.

Testimony will continue on Wednesday.

Both sides have agreed that the evidence given for the purposes of Christie's application will stand as evidence to be used in determining guilt or innocence.

But both sides have indicated that they might need to recall any or all of the witnesses, including Ahenakew.

Sandy Berger, the top Clinton national- security official and erstwhile close adviser to Sen. John Kerry, has finally confessed what he spent nearly a year heatedly denying: that he intentionally smuggled classified documents from the National Archives — and deliberately destroyed them.

In pleading guilty to a misdemeanor count Friday — for which he'll get a slap-on-the-wrist $10,000 fine and lose his security clearance for three years (but probably not his law license) — Berger admits to secreting the documents in his suit jacket.

Then, once he got them home, he cut them to pieces with a pair of scissors.

So much for the "honest mistake" Berger last year maintained he'd committed.

Of particular interest to Berger were drafts of an after-action review by anti-terrorism adviser Richard Clarke of al Qaeda's thwarted attempt to attack America during the turn of the millennium in 1999. The memo reportedly identified national-security weaknesses so "glaring" that only sheer "luck" prevented a 9/11-style attack back then.

Berger had told the 9/11 Commission that the review prompted a strong White House response by the Clinton team. But President Bush's first attorney general, John Ashcroft, testified that he'd read the memo, and it indicated that no action was taken by the Clintonites.

That Berger, in other words, lied about the Clinton administration's contempt for national security. (One of his CIA directors, John Deutsch, recall, stored 17,000 pages of top-secret documents and wrote classified memos on a home computer that was also used to surf Internet porn sites.)

Who was right? Well, it wasn't John Ashcroft who stuffed the secret documents down his pants — then claimed he had "accidentally discarded" them.

That in itself would have been a violation of law. What now emerges, by his own admission, is that Sandy Berger was engaged in a clumsy, post-9/11 cover-up of his own third-rate burglary.

Even more disturbing is the cavalier attitude of leading Democrats to this whole sordid affair.

"For all those who know and love him, it's easy to see how this would happen," one former White House colleague told The Washington Post at the time.

As for Bill Clinton himself, he couldn't stop chuckling over the whole thing.

"That's Sandy for you," he said at a Denver book signing last summer. "We were all laughing about it on the way over here."

Who's laughing now, Bill?

Not Sandy Berger.

The Conservative and New Democratic parties joined forces yesterday to demand Ottawa dramatically ratchet up diplomatic pressure on Iran after revelations that Canadian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi was brutally raped and tortured while in Iranian custody in 2003.

"We want the government to do what they should have done almost two years ago, which is to drop the failed approach of soft-peddling and soft diplomacy, and make tough demands," Tory foreign affairs critic Stockwell Day said.

Both Mr. Day and his NDP counterpart, Alexa McDonough, said Canada should withdraw its ambassador to Iran if Ottawa doesn't immediately get satisfaction from Tehran on key issues, such as the return of Ms. Kazemi's remains to her family in Canada and a new criminal investigation subject to international monitors.

At a press conference in Toronto yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew brushed aside the calls for a new approach, saying Canada is already doing all it can to seek justice for Ms. Kazemi.

Mr. Pettigrew said the new testimony in the Kazemi case, which comes from the emergency-room physician who examined her before she died, "certainly demonstrates gruesome details that make it extremely troubling, most disturbing. But it does not change the nature of the dossier."

The other day I found myself, for the umpteenth time, driving in Vermont behind a Kerry/Edwards supporter whose vehicle also bore the slogan ‘FREE TIBET’. It must be great to be the guy with the printing contract for the ‘FREE TIBET’ stickers. Not so good to be the guy back in Tibet wondering when the freeing thereof will actually get under way. For a while, my otherwise not terribly political wife got extremely irritated by these stickers, demanding to know at a pancake breakfast at the local church what precisely some harmless hippy-dippy old neighbour of ours meant by the slogan he’d been proudly displaying decade in, decade out: ‘But what exactly are you doing to free Tibet?’ she demanded. ‘You’re not doing anything, are you?’ ‘Give the guy a break,’ I said back home. ‘He’s advertising his moral virtue, not calling for action. If Rumsfeld were to say, “Free Tibet? Jiminy, what a swell idea! The Third Infantry Division go in on Thursday”, the bumper-sticker crowd would be aghast.’

But for those of us on the arrogant unilateralist side of things, that’s not how it works. ‘FREE AFGHANISTAN’. Done. ‘FREE IRAQ’. Done. Given the paintwork I pull off every time I have to change the sticker, it might be easier for the remainder of the Bush presidency just to go around with ‘FREE [INSERT YOUR FETID TOTALITARIAN BASKET-CASE HERE]’. Not in your name? Don’t worry, it’s not.
